CALL FOR PRESENTATIONS at the ATLANTIC COMMUNITY SHOWCASE

Symposium on Child and Youth Mental Health
Investing in Child and Youth Mental Health – Mobilizing Atlantic Canadians

for a Positive Future

August 17 – 19, 2015

Holland College, Charlottetown, PEI

CALL FOR PRESENTATIONS

  • Have you worked in a program or project for children or youth that was inspired by a great idea?
  • Have you developed an innovative policy to influence the mental health and emotional safety of your community?
  • Have you seen positive results that you would like to share with others?

Then we would like to invite you/your organization to share your experience in a poster or table top presentation during the Atlantic Community Showcase on August 18 during a symposium on child and youth mental health.  The Symposium, entitled Investing in Child and Youth Mental Health – Mobilizing Atlantic Canadians for a Positive Future will be held August 17-19 at Holland College in Charlottetown, PEI. It is hosted by the Atlantic Summer Institute on Healthy and Safe Communities (ASI) in partnership with the Socially and Emotionally Aware Kids (SEAK) Project from the Canadian Mental Health Association Nova Scotia Division, and Atlantic Canada Children’s Effective Service Strategies in Mental Health (ACCESS-MH).  The goal of the Symposium is to build on evidence to influence and mobilize decision makers from grassroots to government to improve the mental health and well-being of Atlantic Canadian children and youth. For more information, visit www.asi-iea.ca.

PROCESS OF SELECTION

We ask that you send us a short description of your project using the online template that is provided with this call. The deadline for receiving a description of your presentation (abstract) is May 15, 2015 at 12:00pm (noon) Atlantic time.

A panel of reviewers will review the abstracts submitted and select projects that:

  • relate to the theme of child and youth mental health;
  • are innovative and demonstrate promising collaborative practices, policies, research, and;
  • involve at least two sectors and many partners.

We are looking for presentation proposals in French and/or English from:

  • community groups
  • practitioners
  • researchers
  • educators
  • policy makers
  • students

If you have a project that meets these criteria, we want to hear from you! In total we anticipate that 10-12 presentations will be displayed either on table tops or as poster boards; a great opportunity to share information about the work of promoting mental health amongst children and youth throughout Atlantic Canada. We will give priority to proposals from Atlantic Canada, but we also encourage others to submit abstracts.

PARTICIPATION IN THE ATLANTIC COMMUNITY SHOWCASE

As a presenter at the Atlantic Community Showcase, you will benefit from the networking opportunities and chance to profile your work to Symposium attendees who are engaged in child and youth mental health programs. The Symposium will attract researchers, policy makers, advocates working in multiple sectors (such as education, health, justice, child and family, or community services, non-profit and private sectors), parents, caregivers, youth and members of the general public who are promoters of positive mental health.

The Atlantic Community Showcase will be held in the afternoon of August 18, 2015 using a Carousel Format – an engaging, interactive means of presenting your work. Using this format, each presenter will take 2-3 minutes to promote her/his presentation to participants. We suggest you focus on communicating two main reasons why audience members should attend your presentation. Be creative in explaining your work quickly and concisely, and promoting the uniqueness and strength of your particular presentation.

Participants will visit your presentation for 12 – 15 minutes, and then will be signaled to move to another table top or poster board. You will be giving your presentation to groups of participants 3 times during the showcase portion of the program. After the carousel of presentations has been completed, participants will be discussing in small groups and reporting back on one thing they learned from the Atlantic Community Showcase that they are going to take back to their community / organization.

You will also have a “dance card” at your presentation which will provide other times when you will be available during the Symposium to meet with interested participants to discuss your project.

Presentations will remain available for viewing and discussion during the Symposium. Wireless access is available for table top presentations.  Additional information (specifications, format of presentations, setting up and dismantling times) will be provided to selected presenters.

WRITING YOUR ABSTRACT

Presentation summaries (abstracts) must be submitted online at
http://www.thequaich.pe.ca/UltimateSurvey/takeSurvey.asp?surveyID=400

You will be asked to complete a template that will include:

  • a description of your presentation

  • a short biography
