The theme this year is Renewing Democracy Through Social Justice: Adding New Voices and the program runs from August 19-21 at Holland College. Pre-Institute Workshop: “Elections and Democratic Engagement of Citizens”

An interactive workshop designed to address the concern that democratic elections often do not deliver long-term democratic citizen involvement. Participants will share their experience of election processes and identify values that either promote or hinder long-term democratic engagement. Working together, participants will propose changes and strategies for making electoral processes contribute to long-term citizen/community engagement in building strong democracies.

Storytelling Circle – “Hearing Stories: Advocating for Social Justice in Atlantic Canada”

A storytelling event featuring the voices and perspectives of those who are often under-represented in Canadian democratic institutions. Presented in a theatre-in-the-round format and moderated by Yvette Doucette of the PEI Association for Newcomers to Canada, storytellers Janet Charchuk, Samantha Lewis, Harun Sadat, Sarah Brown & Travis Fowler will share their experiences of advocating for social justice and overcoming the various challenges they faced in their communities.

Income inequality has been described as the “defining issue of our time”, leading to stagnant economic growth, increased health problems, social dissension and a loss of hope. Presenting the keynote address of the 2014 Atlantic Summer Institute, Canadian Senator Art Eggleton hopes to raise awareness and offer solutions to this issue during his speech. A reception sponsored by the City of Charlottetown will follow the keynote event at the Fathers Pub in the Celebration Zone.
Social Circus

An interactive presentation and performance by Mike Hirschbach, director of the Halifax Circus School and Circus Circle, a free social circus program for youth in Nova Scotia which uses circus arts as a medium for social justice and social good.
